Not bending the knee on the Lord’s Day1, is a symbol of the Resurrection, through which by the grace of Christ we were freed both from our sins, and from death which was in Him put to death. From apostolic times did this custom take its beginning, as says the holy Irenæus Martyr and Bishop of Lyons, in his discourse on Easter, wherein he makes mention of Pentecost too,2 wherein we bend not the knee, since it is of equal account3 with the Lord’s day, according to the reason given.
