Hebrews

It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

In the earliest points of my curiosity about Christianity, I was primarily listening to Catholic apologetics from Catholic Answers. I was relying on someone to explain the doctrines to me and logically defend them rather than thrusting myself into the book and trying to make sense of it. In general this is the way to go when you're new in my opinion. But as you're exposed to scripture in portions, at some point it will call you to investigate further.

At this time I was not certain that I was going to become Christian. And what stuck out to me was:

26 For if we sin deliberately after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins,

27 but a fearful prospect of judgment, and a fury of fire which will consume the adversaries.

28 A man who has violated the law of Moses dies without mercy at the testimony of two or three witnesses.

29 How much worse punishment do you think will be deserved by the man who has spurned the Son of God, and profaned the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and outraged the Spirit of grace?

30 For we know him who said, "Vengeance is mine, I will repay." And again, "The Lord will judge his people."

31 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

This caused me to open up the book looking for context. As it's a relatively short book compared to others, I decided to read the whole thing. To sum it up, it's mostly about how the new covenant with Christ replaces the old covenant with Israel which is fulfilled.

It's a letter specifically addressed to the Hebrew people, who before Christ were called to uphold all kinds of ceremonial laws, which are rendered unnecessary now that Christ is the Paschal Lamb of the new covenant.

What called me here is the idea that, for my entire life, my ignorance has shielded me from responsibility in many ways. But after learning these things, I will no longer have an excuse.

If at some point I try to have one foot into the house of God and one foot out, I will be liable for that. It seems like a strange place to start reading the Bible but that is why I started there.
