Most of my sites have an old fashioned minimalism to them and I focus more on content than what I generally consider to be visual noise. I find that when the content is the part that you care about, that's the best way to do it. However there is a case for pages where graphic design is the content. I don't often do that but sometimes I do usually in the form of single page experiments.
